| The owners of a grade two
listed farmhouse (circa 1650) that has been the subject of extensive
renovation have been able to install a highly effective hot
water and central heating zoning network with a Horstmann Controls’
ChannelPlus H47XL electronic programmer at the heart of the
control system.
The brand new and unique ChannelPlus H47XL is the only electronic
programmer capable of offering a combination of four independent
7 day timers each giving up to 3 ‘on’ and ‘off’
functions per day in a single unit. The user friendly programmer
has been purpose designed for domestic use, unlike many other
four channel devices which are based on ‘time switch’
features which are more suited to industrial applications.
Ease of use was the attraction for Adrian and Dorothy Goldsack
when planning the water management in their renovated family
home located just outside the Somerset town of Wincanton.
The central heating and hot water systems – both oil
fired – have zones whose make-up have been driven by
a combination of practicality and lifestyle.
There is a conventional hot water/central heating boiler
supplemented by an AGA which, in the winter months can also
heat the hot water. When using the conventional boiler the
hot water is switched via a zone valve. Three further zone
valves are fitted between the boiler and heating zones, activated
individually by the ChannelPlus.
The heating zones have been designed to give flexibility
when the couple are in the house during school term times
which need to change when their children are on holiday.
Because the ChannelPlus can offer the four zoning options
– hot water from the boiler and three individual heating
zones - Mr and Mrs Goldsack are able to heat the house to
reflect the areas in use or proposed for use. There are three
Horstmann HRT2 room thermostats strategically located in each
heating zone. These are hard wired and feature a bi-metallic
sensor to ensure excellent response to temperature changes
and a rotating dial that permits setting between 5ºC
and 35ºC.
The ChannelPlus XL47 programmer enables installers to comply
with the latest zoning requirements in Part L of the amended
Building Regulations.
In the latest Domestic Heating Compliance Guide there is
second tier guidance that requires not only heating zones
that exceed 150²m to have independent time and temperature
control but now also includes the hot water zones. These currently
apply to new build domestic dwellings.
As such, the fourth channel on the new ChannelPlus XL can
provide the ability to ensure absolute compliance. There is
also the option to use the fourth channel for the control
of under floor heating which is increasingly favoured for
zonal background heating in new build.
For a number of years the ChannelPlus range has been the
market leading domestic central heating programmer with the
ChannelPlus H37XL the only electronic unit capable of controlling
three independent channels – hot water and two heating
zones. Now, with the new 4 channel model, Horstmann Controls
remains in the forefront of programmer design to meet increasingly
complex Building Regulation’s zoning requirements.
From the installer viewpoint standard back plates coupled
with the automatic clock and simplicity of programming ensure
ease of installation and commissioning in all applications.
